Europa Cup 2 Man Bobsleigh Race
07 December 2006
Konigssee, Germany
The Europa Cup 2 Man bobsleigh race took place in Konigssee, Germany with 40 teams entered into the two heat race. One team was disqualified so only 39 teams were ranked. The British team had an excellent top ten result with Marine Martin Wright and his brakeman Dan Money. The GB1 sled finished the race in 6th position on what is a demanding track, some 1188 metres long. Martin and Dan had the 7th fastest start in the first run with a 4.96 second start and Martin drove the track exceptionally well finishing in 57.70 seconds. This was the 8th fastest run of the first heat and the sled achieved speeds in excess of 126 km/hr. In the second heat, Martin and Dan matched their first heat start time. This was the 4th fastest start in the second run and Martin had another consistent run down the mountain and finished with a time of 57.85 seconds. This was the 9th fastest run of the second heat. The GB1 sled had a combined overall time of 1 minute 55.55 seconds which was fast enough to place them in 6th position overall. Martin had 2 very good runs in the race whereas other sleds had fast first runs but very poor second runs. Martin is proving to be a very competent 2 man bobsleigh driver having spent the last few seasons as a crew member on the British team sliding behind Lee Johnston. The Germany I sled piloted by Thomas Florschuetz won the race with the Switzerland II sled in second position and the Switzerland I sled in third place.
