Cortina D?ampezzo, Italy - 12/01/2007

The Konica Minolta FIBT World Bobsleigh Tour restarted on the morning of Friday 12 January in Cortina D?ampezzo in Italy with the Women?s Bobsleigh Tour. 15 crews entered the 2 lauf race which took place on the 1350 metres of the historic 1956 Olympic Track. With Jackie Davies remaining on the Europa Cup Circuit as she is currently at the top of the Europa Cup Drivers table, it was down to Nicola Minichiello and her brakewoman Lauren Therin to represent Great Britain. Nicola and Lauren were drawn 13th to start. In the first heat, prior to Nicola and Lauren sliding, a new track record was set by the 2006 Olympic Gold Medallist, Sandra Kiriasis (Germany I) with a finish time of 54.60 seconds. She beat her own track record of 54.66 seconds which was set in December 2005.

Nicola and Lauren had a start time of 5.37 seconds and this was the 4th fastest start of the first heat. Nicola drove the sled to a finish time of 56.19 seconds, which put the GB1 sled in 12th position. At the end of the first run, the Germany I sled was in first position, Germany II in 2nd place and Canada I in 3rd place. As Nicola and Lauren were lying in 12th position following the first heat, in the second run, their sled was 4th to start. Nicola and Lauren had a 5.40 second start which was the 9th fastest run in the second heat and they had a finish time of 56.23 seconds. This put the GB1 sled in 10th position as both the Netherlands I sled (10th after the 1st run) and the Russia I sled (11th after the 1st run) had slower runs in the second heat. These teams slipped back to 14th and 15th place respectively. A new start record (5.29 seconds) was set in the second run by the Canada I sled driven by Helen Upperton, with her brakewoman Jennifer Ciochetti. This beat the previous start record by 1/100th second. Suzanne Gavine Hlady and Heather Moyse of Canada set the previous start record on 16 December 2005.

The Great Britain sled finished the race in 10th place with a combined finish time of 1 minute 52.42 seconds, some 2.89 seconds behind the winning Germany I sled. The Germany I sled had a combined finish time of 1 minute 49.53 seconds. The Women?s Tour now moves onto Igls, Austria for the next World Cup Race.
