Women's FIBT Invitational - Calgary
18 February 2007
A race report from Pete Gunn: 18th February 2007
A temperature of -25 degrees did nothing to cool the determination of the women's 2-Man team at the Women's FIBT Invitaional Race in Calgary on Sunday, February 18th.
Congratulations to the women's 2-Man teams which comprised of Gemma Metherell and Julia Hubbard in the GB1 sled, and Shauna Vetch and Nina Lake in the GB2 sled in Race 1. GB1 sled came in 2nd position and GB2 achieved 4th position.
Nina Lake and Julia Hubbard teamed up in the GB1 sled for the second race and achieved another brilliant 2nd place. Shauna Vetch and Gemma Metherell also achieved a top 5 position, by gaining 4th place in the GB2 sled.
Team Coach, Peter Gunn, said: "Well done to all the girls taking part."
He added:"They achieved a fantastic result, which considering they had to master the track in such a small space of time, all three that drove did extremely well.
"This was a great learning experience for all, we are delighted."
Thrilled about the girls success, athlete Julia Hubbard, said: "All the girls have driven well this week and there are 2 Canadian teams, 2 USA teams and 2 GB teams so a bit more competition than last week"
"Gemma and I raced together on Friday. We came in second but didn't have the best hit or drive so were a bit disappointed even though we still got a good result."
She added: "On Saturday I raced with Nina and her parents had come out to watch the race so we really wanted to do well. We had great starts on both slides and only a couple of knocks on the drive, so we were really happy to get our silver medals!
The results were as follows;
