2 Women Americas Cup Race 2 - 17-11-2006

The second Americas Cup Race took place in Calgary at 1700 hrs on Thu 16 Nov 06. Following the success of the previous day the British girls were hoping for an even more successful race. The Calgary track is over 1400 m in length with 14 corners and is the track where, in 2005, Nicola and Jackie won the Silver medal in the World Championships.

Nicola Miniciello was paired with Joanne John for this race and together they had a start time of 5.80 seconds. This was the fastest start time for the first run. They recorded a finish time of 58.34 after an excellent drive by Nicola. The Russia I sled piloted by Victoria Tokovoya (who beat Nicola in the previous race) was unable to match the GB1 sled in the first run. Jackie Davies used her brake woman from the previous day (Heather Fisher) and they recorded a start of 5.87 seconds. This was the second fastest start of the first run. Jackie was lying in second place most of the way down the track but slipped to third place during the latter part of the track. After the first run Jackie and Heather were lying in third place behind Russia I.

The second run saw Jackie and Heather push the second fastest start of the second run in 5.88 seconds and they recorded a finish time of 58.86 seconds. Jackie maintained second position most of the way down the track but slipped to third towards the bottom. However a podium finish in her second race of the Season was excellent and Jackie, Heather (and her other brake woman Paula Walker) should be commended for the fantastic start they have made to the season. The Army will be particularly proud of Jackie and Paula as they are both junior non-commissioned officers in the Royal Signals.

Nicola and Joanne were the last pair to slide and they recorded a start time of 5.81 seconds which was the fastest start time in the second run. Nicola had another excellent drive and finished her run in 58.32 seconds which gave her a combined time of 1 minute 56.66 seconds. This secured Nicola her first win of the Season ahead of the Russia I sled. Nicola, Joanne and Lauren all deserve huge congratulations for two days of superb results and especially with the first place in the second race of the season. It is truly excellent to have two such high calibre teams competing on the Circuit for the 2006/07 season and they can only go from strength to strength.
