2 Woman Americas Cup Race - 17-11-2006
The Women?s Bobsleigh Tour began on 15 Nov 06 in Calgary, Canada with the first Americas Cup Race of the Season. It produced some excellent results for the Great Britain Women?s Team. Following the Olympic Games in Turin in Feb 06, the Great Britain crew of Nicola Miniciello and Jackie Davies decided to part with both of them pursuing the driving side of bobsleigh life. Jackie Davies was able to get up to speed with her driving by gaining track time at La Plagne and Lake Placid following the Olympic Games and both women have recently spent time driving at Lake Placid in preparation for the Season.
The GB team consisting of Nicola, Jackie and four brake women arrived in Calgary on Fri 10 Nov with their coach, Pete Gunn. After several days of training on the ice they were ready for the Americas Cup Race. Nicola and her brake woman, Lauren Therin had the second fastest start in the first run of the Race with a start time of 5.75 seconds and they had a down time of 58.56 seconds which put them in second place. Jackie with her brake woman, Heather Fisher had the third fastest start in the first run with a time of 5.85 seconds and they had a down time of 58.98 seconds. This put them in fifth position at the end of the first run. The leader at the end of the first run was the Russian sled driven by Victoria Tokovoya.
The second run saw Nicola and Lauren again record the second fastest start time with a push of 5.74 seconds which resulted in a finish time of 58.37 seconds giving them a combined time of 1 minute 56.93 seconds. This gave them a well deserved podium finish of second place which can only boost their confidence for the next Americas Cup Race. They finished 0.56 seconds behind the Russia I sled driven by Victoria Tokovoya. Jackie and Heather had a start time of 5.78 seconds which was the third fastest start of the second run and they finished in a very credible 5th place with a combined time of 1 minute 57.97 seconds. This was an excellent start for Jackie who only took up driving full time after the Olympic Games in February. The 6 GB ladies are all highly motivated athletes and it is hoped that they go from strength to strength during the Season.
