07 March 2006

Life in the military is not just about wearing a uniform or going on operations around the world. There is still time for other activities. For many, this means getting the opportunity to excel on the sports field.

Today, 7 March 06, the cream of Britain's military sporting elite came together to honour those who have reached the pinnacle of sport during the past year.

The 2005 Combined Services Sports Awards, held at the RAF Club in Piccadilly, saw all three Services collect awards and, in the case of the army, two awards.

The awards were presented by Under Secretary of State, Don Touhig. Speaking to an audience drawn from all aspects of military life, he said:

"I believe sport is very important, not just for physical fitness but for building team spirit. It is also a release from everyday stresses and tensions to be able to get away and take part in sport.

"It's a great tribute to the forces that the people here have achieved what they have. The whole country can share in the pride that we feel here today."

Stuart Storey, BBC sports commentator, was Master of Ceremonies at the awards ceremony. He echoed Mr Touhig's sentiments:

"Sport is a great leveller and tests you in every way. It encourages commitment, leadership and helps to develop a competitive edge."

The 2005 years winners are:

  • Sportswoman of the year: Corporal Jackie Davies, Army, Bobsleigh

  • Sportsman of the Year: Sub Lieutenant Peter Reed, Royal Navy, Rowing

  • Sports Official of the Year: Flight Sergeant Damian Clayton, Royal Air Force, Rugby League

  • Combined Services Team of the Year: Army Coxless Four Rowing Team

Corporal Jackie Davies, who represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Turin last month, said:

"I feel really honoured to achieve this award today. I really do owe a great deal to the Army for their support. Some people don't realise what it takes just to get to the Olympics, the sacrifices you have to make."

For Jackie it was a flying visit to London; she is straight back to training with further competition ahead of her before the season ends.

"I'm off to La Plagne tonight to get back on the ice again so it's no rest for the wicked."
