Troop Commander in the Royal Logistic Corp, 25-year-old Gemma Metherll was selected for the team in May 2006 where she took the position of driver.

Gemma said: “I train every day, 6 days a week by doing strength sessions, depending on whether it is the summer or winter season.

“I do get nervous before a big race, but I find that if I channel it, the adrenaline pushes you forward a lot more. The atmosphere around the track and within the team is exhilarating, hearing everyone shout encouragement and fellow team mates spurring you on is great.”

She added: “I have had a few crashes, none that particularly stand out, I get more frustrated by it, thinking what did I do wrong? I always look for the positive in things rather than the negative, so turning it round and learning from it rather than dwelling on it.

“The GB team has grown from 7 athletes last year to 30 competing this year, and we are amongst the strongest nations and producing great results, so things can only get better.”
