Jackie Davies and Nicola Minichiello celebrate the first ever British women's medal in Calgary.

Nicola Minichiello and Jackie Davies have won Britain?s first World Championship bobsleigh medal for 40 years by picking up a silver in the year?s Championships in Calgary. In doing so, they become the first British women ever to medal at the event.

Nicola and Jackie ended the first day just 0.02 secs behind the German pair of Anja Schneiderheinze and Sandra Kiriasis, silver medallists at the 2002 Winter Olympics and World Cup champions for the last three seasons. The Germans extended their advantage on day two to finish 0.28 secs ahead of Nicola and Jackie. Shauna Rohbock and Valerie Fleming of the USA finished in bronze medal position.

"We?re all delighted," said Gordon Bosworth, Chief Executive of the British Bobsleigh Association. "We felt Nicola and Jackie could push for a top six finish, but a silver medal is phenomenal. Huge credit must go to the girls and their coaches for the hard work they?ve put in during the season.

"British bobsleigh has been in the doldrums over the last few years, but the results at the World Championships have given us a real boost. On top of this silver, Lee Johnston and Dan Humphries finished a superb seventh in the men?s event from a starting position of 29th. The performances bodes well as we continue to prepare for the Winter Olympics in Torino 2006."

23 sleds from twelve nations competed in the 5th World Championship in women?s bobsleigh in Calgary.
