Day 2 of Official Practice

23 February 2007

AON/ICE Corp British Bobsleigh Championships - By Mark Carter

Day 2 of Official Practice for the AON/ICE Corp British Championships was another warm, sunny day. In the spring like conditions, Sean Olsen recorded the fastest time of 54.28 seconds and the fastest speed of 112.3kph.

Sean drove a 4-Man bobsleigh to Bronze medal position in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and was over half a second quicker than the next best, John Hillman, but as John said, "training is training, racing is racing...!"

Fastest of the women was Michelle Coy who recorded a credible fifth fastest time overall, despite being lighter than the male teams. There were, however a couple of crashes from the men, as drivers searched for the limit of how low they could safely go through the corners. Everyone was all right though and will be back on t he track tomorrow.

With the "elite" athletes competing in the World Cup at Konigssee, not everyone has arrived at Igls yet for the British Championships. However, 18 teams took part in today's practice, comprising 6 RAF, 4 Army, 2 Navy and 6 civilian teams. For the moment, everyone is very friendly and helpful, but as race day nears, it's going to be every man/woman for themselves!
