The AON British Bobsleigh Championships

01 January 2006

The AON British Bobsleigh Championships were held in Igls, Austria between 6-7 Jan 06.

This is third year that AON have very kindly sponsored the Championships. The AON British 2 Man and 2 Woman Championships were held on Fri 6 Jan 06 with a total of 19 sleds racing, including 2 guest sleds from Australia.

The GB1 Women's pairing of Nicola Minichiello and Jackie Davies were victorious in the Women's race and retained their British title. Jackie Davies also took away the fastest brakewoman trophy. Nicola and Jackie now have their sights firmly set on Turin, with 3 more World Cup Races before the Winter Olympic Games. Michelle Coy and Caz Gray were in second place and at the end of the first part of the Season; Michelle is currently leading on the Europa Cup. Angela Collins and Helen Carter were in third place with Angela Collins taking the trophy for best novice driver.

The AON British 2 Man Championships proved to be an exciting race with 15 sleds entered. The GB1 pair of Lee Johnston and Dan Humphries had 2 clean runs and finished almost 1.7 seconds ahead of the second place pairing of John Hillman and Steve "Smudge" Smith. Lee and Dan will continue on the World Cup Circuit in preparation for the Winter Olympic Games in Turin whilst John and Smudge will move onto the Europa Cup Circuit for the remainder of the Season. A relatively new slider, Myles Mordaunt was in 3rd place, pushed by one of the GB brakemen, Martin Wright. Myles also took away the best novice driver trophy. Dan Humphries took away the fastest brakeman trophy.

The AON British 4 Man Championships were held on Sat 7 Jan. Although there were only 3 teams entered into the Championships, the race was certainly an entertaining one. Lee Johnston rested some of his World Cup Crew and slid with Dan Humphries, Martin Wright and Steve Stacey and held onto his title of British 4 Man Champion. A mixed 4 man crew piloted by Michelle Coy were in 2nd place. Caz Gray, John Ellerby and Paul Farmer crewed for Michelle. A sled piloted by Dave Boot and crewed by father and son team of Mark and Paul Carter together with Ollie Tatlow were in third place.

All the prizes were presented by the Chairman of the BBA, Bruce Ropner. Thanks go out to AON for their continued support of the British Championships.
