World Cup Round 04 - Altenberg Race Reports, January 2012

The fourth round of the Bobsleigh World Cup was held at the challenging Altenberg track, which has three times hosted the World Championships, in 1991, 2000 and in February 2008. The picturesque town of Altenberg is located within the Saxon region of Germany and the Altenberg track is considered to be one of the most difficult in the world. Crashes during training ruled the Canadian and British 4-Man Teams out of the race. The Canadian bobsleigh was severely damaged with pilot Chris Spring and crew members Bill Thomas and Graeme Rinholm being taken to hospital for treatment. Everyone at British Bobsleigh wishes them a speedy recovery.

2-Man Bobsleigh Race 04

The 2-Man bobsleigh race was held on 7th January after being delayed by snowfall and saw Thomas Florschuetz / Kevin Kuske of Germany continue to dominate, taking their third victory out of four races this season. Fellow countrymen Maximilian Arndt / Marko Huebenbecker finished in 2nd place, just 0.01 seconds behind, with Race 1 winners Beat Hefti / Thomas Lamparter of Switzerland a further 0.46 seconds behind, in 3rd place. The GB1 bobsleigh of John Jackson / Bruce Tasker finished in 14th place out of a field of 28, with the race being abandoned after the first run due to further heavy snowfall. The fastest start time of 5.14 seconds was set by the Latvian pairing of Oskars Melbardis / Daumants Dreiskens, well ahead of the 5.26 second start time posted by the race winners. The British pairing of John Jackson / Bruce Tasker set a start time of 5.38 seconds.

4-Man Bobsleigh Race 04

The 4-Man bobsleigh race was held on 8th January amid further snowfall and provided more joy for the Germans, with Maximilian Arndt / Marko Huebenbecker / Alexander Roediger / Martin Putze finishing in 1st place, ahead of Alexandr Zubkov / Philipp Egorov / Dmitry Trunenkov / Nikolay Hrenkov of Russia, with the German team of Thomas Florschuetz / Ronny Listner / Kevin Kuske / Thomas Blashek taking 3rd place. The fastest start time of 5.16 seconds was recorded by the winning team of Maximilian Arndt.

Women's Bobsleigh Race 04

The Women's bobsleigh race was held on 6th January and saw Germany take the top two places, with Cathleen Martini / Janine Tischer beating Sandra Kiriasis / Petra Lammert by 0.02 seconds over the two runs. For the third race in a row, the Swiss team of Fabienne Meyer / Hanne Schenk finished in 3rd place.

Paula Walker / Rebekah Wilson finished in a creditable 8th place, after setting a competitive start time of 5.96 seconds, the fastest start time of all being 5.84 seconds. This result was Paula Walker's best ever result in the World Cup and moved her into 9th place in the World Cup rankings.
