Cesana Race Reports, December 2007

Round 3 of the 2007 - 08 Europa Cup Bobsleigh Championship was held at the Cesana Pariol track in Italy, which hosted the 2006 Winter Olympic Games for Bobsleigh, Skeleton and Luge. Cesana is to the West of Turin in a picturesque mountain region of the Torino province and presents the athletes with a challenging track that has become a very popular training venue since the opening of the indoor push start facility.

2-Man Bobsleigh Race

The 2-Man Europa Cup race held on 13th December 2007 saw Switzerland beat the previously dominant German team, who were pushed down to 5th position, by Latvia and Great Britain, who claimed an excellent 4th position out of the 32 entries.
The race was won by Beat Hefti / Thomas Lamparter (who normally race in the World Cup) with Gregor Baumann / Dominik Weber, also from Switzerland, coming a close 2nd and Edgar Maskalans / Raivis Broks of Latvia 3rd.
The GB1 pairing of John Jackson / Julien Hughes-John recorded the second fastest start time on their way to 4th position with an impressive performance in each of the two race runs, against World Class opposition. The GB2 pairing of John Hillman / Kenny Simm came 23rd and had a good run, but appeared to lose time at the bottom of the track.

4-Man Bobsleigh Race

The 4-Man Europa Cup bobsleigh race held on 16th December 2007 and saw Switzerland win again, with Germany taking 2nd and 3rd places, the order being Beat Hefti 1st, Manuel Machata 2nd and Oliver Harras 3rd.
The GB1 bobsleigh of John Jackson / Kenny Simm / David Street / Julien Hughes-John were 14th with the GB2 bobsleigh of John Hillman / Scott Allaway / Greg Goodrem / Ryan Freckleton 21st and just missing out on having a second run by not finishing in the top twenty.

Women's Bobsleigh Race

The Women's Europa Cup bobsleigh race was held on 16th December 2007 and was won by the Bulgarian pairing of Maria Spirescu / Christine Spataru with Jamia Jackson / Jazmine Fenlator of the USA 2nd and Amanda Stepenko / Sabrina Notorangelo of Canada 3rd.
Great Britain's Paula Walker was a creditable 9th with Heather Fisher and continues to improve with each race, in this her first season as a driver.
