World Cup Round 01 - Winterberg Race Reports, November 2008


The 2008 - 09 World Cup bobsleigh season started over the weekend of 29th and 30th at Winterberg in Germany, which is in the Hochsauerland region of central Germany, the closest city being Dortmund, which is to the East of Winterberg. This event was the start of the eight races that comprise the World Cup and take the teams to eight different bobsleigh tracks in Europe and North America.

2-Man Bobsleigh Race 01

Switzerland's Beat Hefti beat a German trio on his debut as a World Cup driver at Winterberg, setting both start and track records on his way to victory. Beat Hefti / Thomas Lamparter finished 0.17 seconds ahead of the German trio of 2nd placed Andre Lange / Kevin Kuske, 3rd placed Thomas Florschutz / Marc Kuske and 4th placed Matthias Hoepfner / Alex Mann.
The GB1 bobsleigh driven by Royal Marine Lee Johnston lay in 9th position after the first run, but the pairing of Lee Johnston / Dan Money slipped to 17th position in the second run, giving them a creditable 13th place overall, with the promise of even better results to come.

4-Man Bobsleigh Race 01

The 4-Man race also saw both track and start records being set by the winning team of Andre Lange / Alexander Roediger / Kevin Kuske / Martin Putze. Russia's Alexsandr Zubkov / Roman Oreshnikov / Dmitry Trunenkov / Dmitry Stephushkin came 2nd with Steven Holcomb / Justin Olsen / Steve Mesler / Curtis Tomasevic finishing 3rd.
The GB1 bobsleigh of Lee Johnston / Karl Johnston / Allyn Condon / Julien Hughes-John lay in 7th position after the first run, just 0.25 seconds off the leader, but slipped to 14th position in the second run, giving them 10th place overall, again with the promise of even better results to come.

Women's Bobsleigh Race 01

The Women's race was won by Helen Upperton / Jennifer Ciochetti of Canada, with Sandra Kiriasis / Romy Logsch of Germany 2nd and Cathleen Martini / Janine Tischer of Germany 3rd.
The GB1 pairing of Nicola Minichiello / Jackie Gunn finished 9th, having encountered snow on their first run, and were beaten only by Canada, Germany and the USA.
