Europa Cup Rounds 03 and 04 and 05 - Winterberg Race Reports, December 2008

The Europa Cup moved to Winterberg in Germany, which is in the Hochsauerland region of central Germany, the closest city being Dortmund, which is to the East of Winterberg.

2-Man Bobsleigh Races 04 and 05

The two 2-Man races were both held on 4th December 2008 and both races were won by the Russians, Dmitry Abramovitch / Philipp Egorev. In the first race Manuel Machata / Richard Adjei-Otto of Germany came 2nd, with Benjamin Schmid / Florian Pawlik of Germany 3rd. In the second race, Gregor Baumann / Domonik Weber of Switzerland came 2nd, with Manuel Machata / Michail Makarow of Germany 3rd.
Royal Marine John Jackson equalled his best ever Europa Cup finish of 4th place I the first race and came 6th in the second race, pushed by Matthew Roberts. Martin Wright / Henry Nwume finished a further 0.45 seconds back in 11th place in the first race, after Henry inadvertently pushed the brake on his way into the bobsleigh, but made amends with 8th place in the second race.
The Development Team of Kenny Simm / Chris Woolley finished in 20th and 27th places, with the other Development Team of Steve Stewart / Adam Randle finishing in 20th and 33rd places respectively.

4-Man Bobsleigh Races 04 and 05

The two 4-Man races were both held on 7th December 2008 and once again both races were won by the Russians, Dimitry Abramovitch / Philipp Egorev / Andrey Jurkov / Petr Moiseev with the German team of Manuel Machata / Richard Adjei-Otto / Florian Becke / Michail Makarow finishing 2nd in both races, in fact just 0.03 seconds behind the Russians in the second race. Fellow Germans Thomas Florschutz / Christoph Heyder / Andreas Barucha / Martin Rostig came 3rd in the second race, with the Swiss team of Gregor Baumann / Linus Hoffman / Armin Batali / Dominik Weber taking 3rd in the first race.
The GB1 bobsleigh of John Jackson / Jamie Devlin / Keith McLaughlin / Roger Smith finished in an excellent 5th and 6th place in the two races. The GB2 bobsleigh of John Hillman / Henry Nwume / Lamin Deen / Ryan Freckleton finished in 15th place in the first race and took an excellent 10th place in the second race, this being Army driver John Hillman's best result to date in the Europa Cup.

Women's Bobsleigh Races 03 and 04

The first of the two Women's Europa Cup bobsleigh races was held on 6th December 2008 and was won by Anja Schneiderh Stoeckel / Christin Senkel of Germany, with Stefanie Szczurek / Patricia Polifka of Germany 2nd and Amanda Stepenko / Veronique Fortin of Canada finishing in 3rd place.
The GB1 pairing of Paula Walker / Kelly Thomas finished in 5th place, this being Army driver Paula Walker's best result to date in the Europa Cup. The pair recorded identical start times of 5.84 seconds in each of the two race runs and finished just 0.02 seconds behind the 4th place French team of Lesa Mayes Stringer / Doriane Flore Remy.
The second of the two Women's Europa Cup bobsleigh races was held on 7th December 2008 and was another Germany 1 -2, with Anja Schneiderh Stoeckel / Patricia Polifka ahead of Christiane Wildgruber / Christin Senkel and Lesa Mayes Stringer / Doriane Flore Remy of France in 3rd place.
Paula Walker / Kelly Thomas again finished 5th and were the 3rd fastest team on their second run, this time finishing all of 0.03 seconds behind the 4th place team.
RAF driver Kerry Morgan had a new brakewoman, Sarah Kelly, in the GB Development Team and finished 22nd in the first race and 24th in the second race.
