World Cup Round 08 - Park City Reports, February 2009

The final Round of the Bobsleigh World Cup Series was held at the Park City track in the USA and saw two 4-Man races being held, to make up for the cancelled Cesana event in December, which was snowed off.
Subject to confirmation by the British Olympic Association (BOA), Nicola Minichiello and Lee Johnston have now qualified for the Olympics in Women's and 4-Man bobsleigh respectively.

2-Man Bobsleigh Race 08

The 2-Man bobsleigh race was held on 12th February 2009 and saw the Russian pairing of Alexsandr Zubkov / Alexey Voevoda finish in 1st place, with Thomas Florschutz / Marc Kuehne of Germany finishing in 2nd place and Beat Hefti / Thomas Lamparter finishing in 3rd place.
Royal Marine Lee Johnston was pushed by Matt Douglas after Dan Money was injured in the first 4-Man race. Matt made his competition debut at Park City and finished in 25th place with a push time of 5.18 seconds, the fastest push time being 4.80 seconds, which was once again recorded by the 3rd placed Beat Hefti / Thomas Lamparter.
After a difficult season that saw injuries to two of his brakemen, Lee Johnston finished 20th in the World Cup rankings.

4-Man Bobsleigh Races 07 and 08

The 4-Man bobsleigh races were held on 13th and 14th February 2009, and both were won by Steven Holcomb / Justin Olsen / Steve Mesler / Curtis Tomasevic of the USA, with Janis Minins / Daumants Dreiskens / Oskars Melbardis / Intars Dambis of Latvia in 2nd and Alexsandr Zubkov / Roman Oreshnikov / Dmitry Trunenkov / Dmitry Stepushkin of Russia finishing in 3rd place.
The GB1 bobsleigh was crewed by Lee Johnston / Karl Johnston / Allyn Condon / Dan Money but were disqualified in the first race after Dan Money fell out and was injured during loading. However, the team made amends in the second snow affected race, but couldn't quite repeat the start time of 4.95 seconds from the previous day, but finished in 16th place.
Lee Johnston finished the season 14th in the World Cup ranking.

Women's Bobsleigh Race 08

The Women's race was held on 13th February 2009 and saw Cathleen Martini / Janine Tischer of Germany finishing in 1st place, with Kallie Humphries / Shelly-Ann Brown of Canada 2nd and Sandra Kiriasis / Patricia Pilifka of Germany in 3rd place.

Nicola Minichiello / Gillian Cooke finished their excellent season off with a solid 6th place with Paula Walker / Kelly Thomas not far behind in 9th place, a fantastic performance considering that this was only their third World Cup race.
Nicola Minichiello finished in 3rd place in the World Cup ranking with Paula Walker ranked in 22nd place.
